Candidates choose Canada over Carlow!

Last week we wrote about the joys or recruiting IT candidates for Dublin... today we ask, if the dream job came up in a county outside of Dublin – would up sticks you move??

On average when we ask candidates to relocate away from Dublin – the answer is usually “on yer bike”. Unless a person is from a county outside of Dublin it is almost always a dead duck.

Moving

There are numerous companies hiring outside of the capital including big names like Bioware, IBM and Ericsson however when it comes to filling these positions the stream of candidates is thin on the ground.

In general when asked about 90% of Dublin based candidates will not relocate. Trying to get someone from Dublin to move to Galway is like Ireland winning the Euros – Nice in theory, but realistically it’s never going to happen!

Even Canada seems more attractive than Ireland when it comes to relocating – we recently posted an ad for a management position in Canada and got a better response than we usually get for Jobs in other counties. People are more open to moving 10000 miles away than a 2 hour drive down the motorway!

Given the choice, it seems when relocating, other Irish cities don't cut the mustard. What is the reason for this??

What are your thoughts? Why are people so reluctant to move from Dublin to other Irish cities?

Dublin - You're looking well!

Dublin... are ye feelin' well? 'Cos you're lookin' well!

We stumbled across this little beauty yesterday and really enjoyed it.

The video commissioned by www.dublintown.ie is a nice piece of advertising and promotion for the capital city. Aside from the slightly hipster style running through it, it showcases Dublin’s most famous sites and locations and shows it is a metropolitan city with a small town vibe.

As the majority of the jobs we recruit for are based in Dublin, we love coming across nuggets like this that show the capital in its prime; A vibrant, young city with plenty of opportunity and character!

Who would want to work in a city with no buzz? Not us. As it says many times in the video, the thing that sets Dublin apart from other cities in Europe is it's ability to mix banter into every part of ordinary life... including work.

Also, a Big congrats to Eugene Gibbons who successfully placed the most people in Jobs in April!! Well done Euge! (Also lookin' well)

The 6 Second Skim

We came across an interesting article in the Business Post last week that really struck interest in the office.

The article claims that on average a recruiter spends around 6 seconds skimming a CV… 6 whole seconds!!

I can already hear the cries and uproar "recruiters getting paid for 6 seconds of work"... This is, however where our job really starts. If in 6 seconds your CV is clearly written and concise our fingers are already dialing your number. Then the real qualifying begins.

While we don't discount poorly written or confusing CVs they do dramatically decrease your chance of being offered the best and most suitable roles for you.

In our last blog we spoke about the do’s and don’ts of CV writing. This article further highlights the perils of sending in a badly constructed CV.

The 3 most covered areas in the 6 seconds:

· Your name

· Current title and company

· Current position start and end dates

If you pass the six second skim, it’s all action. If you don’t your CV may go onto a database of 50000 other candidates.

It may seem incredible that in six seconds, a recruiter has judged 5 or ten years of your work but this is how important your CV is! Recruiters include not only recruitment agencies but HR managers and Hiring managers too.

In short you have six seconds to sell yourself, make them six good ones!

The IT Market changes quicker than the Irish weather

The IT market is ever changing and in turn, we have to change with it. Recently we have seen a shift from the technology sector being dominated by the big American names to smaller home grown businesses and ideas emerging. Now that we're into the fourth month of 2012 and the year is in full swing we take a few moments to look back on the first quarter of the year.

January proved to be a busy month for us. New clients flooded in after Christmas and set the bar for the year ahead. While we found candidates cautious about new opportunities in 2011, the start of the new year signalled a change in opinion and a new found optimism in the job market. New jobs flooded in and filling them seemed like an almost impossible task... It wasn't!

February came around and recruitment ramped up further. This month we saw a massive increase in the number of start-up and new comers to the Irish market looking for local talent. It was an exciting month for us. Up until last year the majority of our clients had been well established mostly large software companies and financial institutions. This was a refreshing change!

March continued in a similar fashion! Start up city hit Dublin and we were in the thick of it. Last month, a huge amount of the placements we made were with brand new clients.

So far this year these are the top 3 most sought after IT candidates in the Dublin market:

  1. Java developers (Textbook! There will always be a need for Java heads) with 9 companies currently looking for them... They're still top of the list
  2. Linux System administrators ( from start up to global giant, these engineers are in seriously high demand... 7 live roles with companies right now!)
  3. QAs. This is not a test! QA engineers needed.... We have found the demand for testers has been steady this year.  6 live roles with companies right now!

And.... Congratulations to Neil and Ciara who scooped the stelfox cup for getting the most people jobs last month! Nice work guys. Lookin' well!
